What is an age percentile?

Your age percentile tells you what percentage of a population is younger than you. If your result is 60%, you are older than roughly 60 out of every 100 people in that population. It does not mean you have lived 60% of your life.

How is my age percentile calculated?

We add up the people in younger age groups, include a proportion of your current age group based on your age in years, then divide by the selected population and multiply by 100. The calculation assumes birthdays are spread evenly within each age group.

A simple example: in an imaginary population of 1,000 people, if an estimated 650 are younger than you, your age percentile is 65%. The calculator applies the same idea to UN population data.

Where does the population data come from?

OldFart.io uses the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024, with the medium-variant projections for 2026. The dataset contains population counts by age and sex, plus life expectancy by age, for the world and individual countries and areas.

These are estimates, not a live census. Results are rounded, and the oldest age group combines everyone aged 100 or above, so comparisons at those ages are especially approximate.

Why does my age rank change between countries?

Countries have different age distributions. In a population with many children and young adults, you can be older than a larger share of people. In a population with more older adults, the same birthday can put you at a lower percentile.

What is the difference between median and mean age?

The median age divides a population into two halves: one younger, one older. The mean age is the average across the population. Both describe the population you selected, rather than your own age.

What do the life expectancy numbers mean?

Life expectancy at birth and remaining life expectancy at your current age are different measures. Remaining life expectancy is the average number of additional years for people who have already reached that age, under the mortality rates represented in the data.

These population averages do not account for your individual health or circumstances and cannot predict how long you will live. Treat them as demographic context for a fun calculator.
